Bridge Spans Creek In Green Space
The Green Space Committee has built a 16-foot-long bridge over Trantham Creek to make it easier for hikers and cyclists to cross the rocky stream. The mile-long green space trail, which starts at a cairn across from the intersection of Chestnut Forest Road and Fairview Forest Drive, traverses the stream at several points. Strategically placed rocks make crossing the creek fairly easy. However, there is one area, about 200 yards below Black Oak Forest Road, where it's much more difficult to get across.
To make that crossing safer, committee members Gary Bolick and Rob Greene built a wooden bridge on July 10th. They were helped by Bolick's sons Forrest, 10, and Sawyer, 7 (pictured in photo).
The group first built the rough structure out of unused, leftover framing materials at Greene's house. They also pre-cut the decking there. Then they transported everything in Bolick's truck to Black Oak Forest and dragged the unfinished bridge through the woods and down to the creek. Once the group placed it across the span, Forrest and Sawyer screwed down the decking. Then they nailed stainless steel stucco lathing onto the decking so it wouldn't get too slippery.
They decided not to fasten the bridge to the rocks. "If we get a real gully washer and the stream floods, hopefully the water will just wash the bridge downstream or push it aside," Bolick explained. "Then we could go get it and bring it back. If we had bolted it down, debris would pile up and likely snap the bridge in half."
He said it took the group about five hours to build and install the bridge. "We spent $42 in materials and donated the framing material and labor," he added.
"The trail in the lower green space (below Black Oak Forest) is a tougher area to hike and bike than the upper green space (between Red Oak Forest and Black Oak Forest) because of the mossy rocks," said Bolick. "We built the bridge because we wanted to make the trail more accessible for hikers and bikers of all ages."
